From the Washington Times -- While members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have made much about the U.S. Olympic uniforms being made in China, a more disappointing aspect of the uniform that has received nary a mention is its distinctly European look.
Not only do our athletes don French berets, but the color pattern on the hat’s patch is arranged in the order of blue, white and red — the colors of the French flag — rather than the red, white and blue of the good old U.S.A.
Moreover the design of the men’s ties contains the heraldic lion that resembles the flag of the old French region of Aquitaine (or maybe it was a nod to the host country with the Tudor crown sewn above the lion). To top it off, the left breast pocket of the blazer is emblazoned with Ralph Lauren’s oversized Polo logo, whereas the tiny American flag above the Olympic rings in the team patch is barely visible and hardly bigger than a lapel pin.
Happily, Mr. Lauren has pledged to make the uniforms in the United States next time. He also could easily correct his design faux pas by sewing the American flag over his huge logo in time for the closing ceremonies, or at least be sure to do so for the next Olympics. After all, our athletes proudly represent the United States of America, not France or Ralphlaurenistan. (source: PAUL KAMENAR of theWashington Times )
